A Sculptural Approach to Public Health

presented by Nola

Kebne Outdoor Gym is a design approach that invites movement, strengthens communities and enhances cities. Developed by Swedish design duo Kauppi & Kauppi, Kebne combines the elegance of Scandinavian form with the functionality of outdoor training. It reimagines the outdoor gym as an inclusive public space—accessible to people of all ages and abilities—and offers long-term benefits for both individual wellbeing and society.

As cities grow and change, public health is taking on an increasingly central role in urban development. When we plan for activity early in the design process, we lay the foundation for healthier lives and more resilient communities. Outdoor gyms are nothing new, but Kebne offers a uniquely inclusive take on the typology. Based on bodyweight training, the modular system is designed to suit people of all ages and abilities—whether you’re just starting out or already well on your way. There are no weights, no moving parts—just open, intuitive stations for stretching and strength, open 24/7, all year round.

Outdoor training brings with it a wide range of proven benefits—physical, mental and social. It promotes wellbeing, helps reduce sick leave, brings young people together in constructive ways, and supports a stronger sense of community. Accessible, spontaneous and free of charge, training in parks or public spaces offers something traditional indoor gyms can’t: a sense of belonging, movement without pressure, and the joy of fresh air.

Kebne was designed by Swedish duo Kauppi & Kauppi, who drew inspiration from the silence of the Scandinavian mountains and the urban buzz of New York’s street gyms. Their aim was to create a piece of public design that feels welcoming, generous and capable of bringing people together—regardless of who you are or how you move. The design language reflects an abstract alpine landscape, referencing the shapes and silhouettes of Kebnekaise, Sweden’s tallest mountain. Sculptural and self-contained, the modules create noticeable visual points in any setting—parks, squares, playgrounds, seafronts or courtyards. Each unit can be placed directly on site, no digging or foundations needed.

Kebne is available in five complementary modules, offering variety for different movements and exercises. It’s an invitation to slow down, stretch out and reconnect—with your own body, with others, and with the world around you.

At Nola, we see the outdoors as a lifelong playground—a space for discovery, connection and movement throughout life. When we reshape urban environments, we see how design can reduce isolation, strengthen bonds and create a more vibrant, inclusive everyday life for everyone,” says Henrik Edlund, Nola’s CEO.
