Schillerplatz in Nürtingen

Designed by BHMP

Location: Germany — Type: Squares and Plazas — Built: 2021 Show on Google Maps

A square that highlights the historic Kreuzkirche, showcases the existing Ochsenbrunnen, and offers plenty of seating for visitors – these were just some of the goals of the new design for the Schillerplatz in Nürtingen. At the same time, it was necessary to restructure the existing paths across the square and give the space a cohesive appearance. Numerous new tree plantings, distinctive design elements, such as custom-designed seating, and a uniform paving material create a sense of continuity, spatial zoning, and an appropriate aesthetic. The irregular outline of the space and the many uses required a durable, technically and aesthetically flexible paving pattern. The choice of various formats of sawed granite in a puzzle-like pattern provides a visually neutral structure that can easily be adapted to the different edges and uses of the square, while also reflecting the materiality of the western Kirchstraße. Large-format slabs mark the outlines of the former city gate, subtly bringing them into focus.

Exposing the church façade was a central idea in the planning process, to give the square an identity and create a spatial boundary. For this the existing trees were thinned out and more suitable, climate-resilient species were added. This tree grove, together with a carpet of large-format granite slabs, now defines the church plateau, which lies a step higher than the square. The slabs transition smoothly from the city pavement, rising slightly at the southeastern corner. This new edge is accentuated by a light strip along the step, visually highlighting this so-called church plateau.

The existing Ochsenbrunnen was restored by a stonemason and moved further toward the center of the square. The fountain basin was removed, and the fountain lowered to ground level. This increased the usable area of the square, making it more functional, and has rendered the water surface visually more prominent. At the same time, it draws attention to the fountain sculptures.

The square’s furnishings echo the design language of the church plateau. Individual seating blocks made of granite mimic the format and material of the paving. They can be used for seating or as platforms for temporary exhibitions. Moveable seating elements of wood and steel also create many seating areas throughout the square. These can be moved to other areas during events. For example, when arranged in front of the church, they form a small stage for concerts.

A small tree grove in the southern part of the square mirrors the grove on the church plateau and frames the square towards the street, while creating a shaded area for the outdoor dining areas of nearby restaurants.

A comprehensive lighting concept ensures an inviting atmosphere during the evening. The light columns from the western Kirchstraße were incorporated and extended into some sections. Additionally, the church plateau’s raised edge is highlighted with a light strip and the elements of the Ochsenbrunnen are subtly illuminated from below. Spotlights under the trees create a calm atmosphere around the Kreuzkirche. The façade is lit with gobo projectors from the columns on the west side of the square.
