Drawing remains a central method in design, operating as both exploratory sketch and communicative artifact. Hand-drawing offers immediacy, ambiguity, and tactile engagement, fostering openness and discovery. Yet drawings also risk premature formalization, reducing complex social, political, and ecological realities into simplified, aesthetically pleasing surfaces. In landscape architecture, drawing can illuminate but also obscure, depending on how it mediates between idea and environment. To question drawing is to question how representation guides thought and constrains imagination.

Firms such as SWA have been able to fund research fellows exploring generative AI. Anecdotally, I have learned that other firms have similar internal initiatives. One trend is using LoRA (Low-Rank Adaptation of Large Language Models), a lightweight training technique that can “fine-tune” one’s Stable Diffusion models to generate images in a certain style.
