The Future Garden Master’s program aims to provide both a wide range of cultural stimuli and the technical and methodological tools necessary to address landscape design in its various forms – from the management and care of both historical and contemporary open spaces, to the formation of strategies and actions that interpret our current relationship with nature, the living environment, and the city. For this reason, the program adopts the keyword “garden” as a reference to design approaches that encompass different scales and temporalities, combining aesthetics and ecology, close-up vision and global understanding.
The program builds on the long-standing experience gained from the second level Master’s in Landscape and Garden Architecture at Università Iuav di Venezia, and benefits from the unique international atmosphere of Venice, which profoundly influences academic life and enriches the overall study experience.
Students will gain a theoretical and cultural foundation, enriched by methodological frameworks and technical knowledge. This learning will be supported by contributions from leading experts, demonstrating how the various facets of the landscape architect’s profession can offer effective responses to today’s challenges – whether in terms of heritage conservation and practical landscape know-how, the search for innovative design solutions, or ways of interacting with specialized contributions and the various professions involved.
The program includes a structured combination of lectures, workshops, and field visits to nurseries, parks, and gardens.
The active involvement of prominent professionals from both the Italian and international scenes will support the design experiments and workshops. The design labs within the modules provide a platform for testing and refining the technical knowledge and cultural insights acquired. The educational approach is strongly multidisciplinary, aiming to integrate science and art – combining botany, ecology, climate studies, and soil science with the history of gardens and landscapes, theoretical frameworks, representational techniques, and current practices.
The master’s program not only prepares professionals capable of joining design teams – often international – but also aims to train experts in the design, implementation, maintenance, and management of landscapes, from a perspective that sees the garden as the starting point for architectural, landscape, and environmental actions.
The program aims to enhance and promote the professional roles of landscape architects and garden designers/garden curators: custodians of theoretical and practical skills that, although not yet widespread, are crucial for addressing real demands in both national and international job markets.
At the end of the program, students will have acquired specialized knowledge from the different branches of landscape design through the exercise of project development as a form of critical synthesis. They will be able to identify meaningful paths to shape their professional direction, with a broad and strategic vision of employment opportunities in the field.
