Hood Design Studio is a landscape architecture and social art practice based in Oakland, CA. The studio’s cultural practice is tripartite: Everyday, Lifeways, and Commemoration.

Everyday examines overlooked, mundane elements of the landscape—everyday places, in-between spaces, and sites of work and worship—reconsidering how we engage with them.

Lifeways studies the social patterns and practices of a place, introducing provocations that enhance civic life.

Commemoration seeks to remember, embrace, and celebrate histories and cultures.

These three lenses enable the studio to understand the idiosyncrasies of each place and respond with an approach that adapts to its unique character and people. Through this practice, the studio strengthens both ecological and cultural patterns—contemporary and historic, seen and unseen. The resulting work creates new apertures through which to experience the emergent beauty and strangeness of the world around us.
