Planning is the organized shaping of land use, infrastructure, and development at multiple scales. It seeks to guide growth, allocate resources, and balance competing needs. Planning carries ideals of order and fairness but also histories of control, exclusion, and segregation. It is always political, deciding who benefits and who pays. For landscape architects, planning is both context and practice: framing how projects sit in larger systems, how regulations shape design, and how ecological and social priorities are negotiated at scale.
Landscape architecture should engage intensively with conviviality—it has the capacity to unify many issues in current theoretical debates and connect the discipline to the global network of the conviviality movement.
