approches.: As part of the urban transformations linked to the arrival of the tramway in Renens, the Mail du Marché is envisioned as a bituminous-coated public square with amenities (playground, fountain, seating) and lined with a row of 16 plane trees. The mail is crossed by Avenue du 14 Avril, framed by four building façades, and connected to the Place du Marché.

Midway through implementation, the municipality—responding to environmental concerns raised by the public—called for a premature redesign of the square. The landscape architecture studio approches. was invited to lead this requalification effort, proposing a renewed vision for the Mail du Marché that prioritized the reduction of hard surfaces and the introduction of abundant vegetation.

The Mail du Marché is thus transformed into a public garden—an emerging oasis of coolness—while preserving the originally planned amenities. The asphalt paving that had already been laid was removed and replaced with a permeable, seeded surface. The planting palette was expanded and enriched, focusing on biodiversity and the adaptability of species to the urban climate. As a result, 26 major trees (pines, plane trees, zelkovas, and hackberries) now structure the space. A shrub layer provides privacy for the square and creates a buffer from Avenue du 14 Avril. The shrubs bring a Mediterranean feel, including loquats, pomegranates, fig trees, strawberry trees, pistachio trees, osmanthus, brooms, and rosemary. Additionally, wildflower-style planting beds cover the ground and enhance floral and faunal diversity. These interventions also simplify stormwater management by promoting on-site infiltration.
