Forestry is the management and study of forests for timber, ecology, and conservation. It is both a science and an industry. Historically tied to extraction, forestry often treated forests as resources rather than living systems. Today it struggles between profit, biodiversity, and climate urgency. For landscape architects, forestry is not a distant discipline but a partner in shaping how forests are imagined, managed, and re-created in landscapes under pressure, inside and outside the urban tissue.

Taking us on a global journey through projects that involve forests as a point of departure, Handel catches us in our preconceived ways of thinking, traversing the undergirding ideas, cutting to the stem of those lines of thought. The book is not an answer to what a forest is, yet we might get an idea of how forest metaphor gets instrumentalized in discourse in spatial design practices and what this metaphor lacks.
