Landezine Awarded Plečnik Medal for Enrichment of Spatial Culture

The Plečnik Awards are among the highest national recognitions for works realised in architecture, landscape architecture, and urbanism in Slovenia. Each year, the Jože Plečnik Fund acknowledges outstanding contributions in the categories of Public Space, Large Scale Realisations, Small Scale Realisations, Professional Publications, and Enrichment of Spatial Culture — the latter being the category in which Landezine is the proud recipient.

Named after Slovenia’s most prominent architect, Jože Plečnik (1872–1957), the awards carry significant symbolic weight. Plečnik’s work shaped not only parts of Vienna and Prague, but most notably the identity of Ljubljana, where his definition of urban fabric and interventions in public space still define the city’s main character. His legacy has been internationally recognised, including through a UNESCO World Heritage listing. As a figure who continues to influence generations, Plečnik represents both a benchmark and a call for the jury to uphold works that help set standards for the future.

This year’s jury — Prof. Ilka Čerpes (chair), Saša Begović, Jerneja Fischer Knap, Nika Grabar, and Urška Kranjc — recognised the team behind the Landezine platform, which “has evolved from a virtual space for publishing exemplary landscape architecture projects into an international online hub” that, through events, extends into “physical space for observing, revealing, and exploring trends in open space design.” The jury acknowledged Landezine’s agility, sensitivity, and “willingness to engage with often uncomfortable questions of the present and future,” awarding the Plečnik Medal to Zaš Brezar, Editor-in-Chief. The award ceremony took place at the Plečnik House in Ljubljana on May 19, followed by the opening of an exhibition showcasing the award recipients’ work. A series of supporting events will follow, including the exhibition opening at the DESSA Gallery, as well as round tables and talks.

We thank the jury for their openness in recognising a curated online international landscape architecture platform “accessible from the scale of a smartphone” as a contributor to the culture of public space, dialogue, and exchange. We thank our readers, practitioners, partners, friends, and colleagues. Landezine thrives most through your curiosity, contributions, and engagement!
