Underpass

An underpass is the space beneath bridges and elevated infrastructures, often overlooked as residual or leftover. Shaded, covered, and cut off from conventional flows, underpasses carry the atmosphere of “other spaces”—in-between, less coded by societal expectations, sometimes threatening, often forgotten. Yet when activated, they can become charged sites for gathering, play, and culture, shifting from voids of neglect to vivid urban typologies in their own right. Underpasses offer opportunities to awaken perception and reclaim the margins of infrastructure. They show that even shadowed spaces can be transformed into places of life and encounter in the heated-up times.

Bridges allow the landscape to flow underneath – or as in recent endeavours, in land bridges or ecoducts, nature flows over.
